MT5 server name and account number: where to find them

The short answer
Both are in the account opening message from your broker, and both can be found in the platform if that message is gone. The account number is purely numeric, six to nine digits, shown next to the account in the Navigator window on desktop and in the Accounts section on mobile. The server name sits right beside it, but it looks nothing like the broker’s brand: it is a technical string along the lines of « Broker-Live 07 », to be copied character for character, spaces and capitals included.
The account number
This is the easier of the two, with one confusion to clear. A MetaTrader account number is made only of digits, usually six to nine. It is neither your email address nor the login you use for your broker’s client area.
That confusion is common and costs time, because many brokers issue a separate client ID, sometimes numeric too, which gets you into their portal but which MetaTrader will refuse. If yours contains a letter, a dash or a dot, it is not the right one.
On desktop, open the Navigator window and expand Accounts: the number is shown at the head of each registered account line. On mobile it appears in the Accounts section, at the top of the screen. In both cases, an account already connected also shows it in the platform title bar.
The server name, the field that breaks the connection
This is the one that causes trouble, for a simple reason: it does not look like what you expect. A broker trading commercially as « Vantage » does not expose a server called « Vantage » but something like « VantageInternational-Live 10 ». The server name is a technical address, not a brand.
It sits in exactly the same place as the account number, right beside it, under Accounts in the Navigator on desktop and in the Accounts section on mobile. The dialog for logging into an existing account also offers the full list to pick from.
One point deserves insisting on, because it causes a good share of the failures: it must be copied character for character. Capitals count, spaces count, the dash counts. A single space added by a copy and paste is enough to fail the connection, with no message anywhere telling you that is where the problem is.
Why a broker has several servers
One broker commonly exposes a dozen servers, and your account accepts exactly one of them. The reasons are technical: separating live accounts from demo accounts, spreading load across numbered instances, and the existence of several legal entities depending on where the account was opened.
The consequence is the central trap of this page. Choosing the wrong server produces exactly the same error as an incorrect password: the connection is refused, with no distinction. So you go looking at the password, you reset it, you try again, and nothing works because the problem was never there.
The useful reflex is therefore the opposite of instinct. Before touching the password, check that the server is the right one, and in particular that a demo account is not being pointed at a live server, or the other way round.
When the platform is not installed
If you have neither the desktop nor the mobile app at hand, both pieces of information are in your broker’s client area, on each account’s record, usually displayed side by side along with the account type.
They are also in the account opening message, in the same block as the passwords. Search your mailbox for « server », and check the spam folder.
The failures that look like a wrong password
Since MetaTrader refuses the connection without ever saying which of the three fields is at fault, here are the real causes, in the order worth checking them.
- the server does not match the account, the most frequent and the most silent case;
- a space or invisible character added by a copy and paste, in the server or in the password;
- the client area login entered instead of the MetaTrader account number;
- an expired demo account, which brokers deactivate after a few weeks without activity;
- the password itself, which comes last on this list for a good reason.
That ordering is not theoretical, it follows how often each cause actually occurs. Starting with the password means starting with the least likely one.
