Where to find your MT5 investor password

It is not recovered, it is reset

This is where most of the time gets lost, so let us clear it first: there is no screen, no menu and no trick that will show you a MetaTrader 5 password again. Your broker’s server keeps no readable copy, which is also why its support desk cannot read it out to you over the phone. The only readable version that ever existed is the one in the account opening message.

From there, two situations. If you still have that message, search your mailbox for « investor »: the password almost always sits in the same block as the account number and the server name, right under the master password. Check the spam folder, those messages often land there.

If it is gone, stop looking. Resetting this password takes a minute and touches nothing else: not your open positions, not your pending orders, not your history. It is the normal operation, not a last resort.

One detail that saves a pointless search: some brokers simply never send an investor password, and at others it does not exist until you set it yourself. If you cannot find it anywhere, there is a fair chance there is nothing to find.

On desktop, from MetaTrader 5

One prerequisite first: you must be connected to the account with the master password. A read-only session cannot change any password, which is exactly what it is there for. If the master password is gone too, skip ahead to the section on the broker client area.

Open the Tools menu, then Options (the Ctrl+O shortcut does the same), and go to the Server tab. Next to the password field sits a button that opens the password change window.

Inside that window, everything hinges on one checkbox: change investor password. Without it you are editing the master password, the one you log in with every day. Tick it, enter the master password as the current password, then type the new investor password twice.

MetaTrader enforces a strict composition, which rejects most passwords people invent on the spot. You need at least:

• a lowercase letter;
• an uppercase letter;
• a digit;
• a special character, such as # @ !

On top of that comes a minimum length, shown in the window itself because it depends on the server, and a ban on reusing the previous password.

The change is applied on your broker’s server, not only on your machine. It therefore takes effect everywhere at once: on your phone, on the web terminal, and for any tool you had given the old one to.

On mobile

The MetaTrader 5 app, on Android and iPhone alike, does the same job. Go to the Accounts section, open the menu in the top right corner, then pick change password. The app then asks which of the two you want to change: choose the investor one, not the master.

Here too you need the master password to confirm, and the same composition rules apply.

One limit worth knowing: the app changes an existing password, it does not create one that was never issued. If your broker never generated an investor password, you will have to go through them.

When the platform is not enough: the client area

Some brokers disable password changes from the terminal and run them from their own client area, the portal where you manage deposits and accounts. If the button is missing or greyed out in MetaTrader, that is not a fault, it is your broker’s choice. Look for your account in their portal: resetting both passwords is almost always there, sometimes under a label along the lines of « read-only password ».

It is also the only route left if you have lost the master password, since everything else depends on it.

One last option if you have neither the desktop app nor your phone at hand: the MetaTrader 5 web terminal can change both passwords as well.

The trap that breaks the connection without warning

This one is worth knowing in advance, because it shows up at the worst moment and looks exactly like a failure. When the master password is reset, the investor password is reset along with it.

The story always plays out the same way. You lose your master password, your broker issues a new one, you log back in, and everything works fine on your side. Except that the analysis tool you had given the old investor password to starts failing, for a reason that appears nowhere. Nothing is broken on its end: the password it holds is simply worthless now.

So the order is always the same. Sort out the master password first if you need to touch it, set the investor password afterwards, and carry the new value over to the tools that were using it. The other way round, you do the work twice.

Since this is why many people land on this page, we may as well be precise about what each of the two allows on our side.

With the investor password, the analysis works in full: reading prices, detecting structure, a numbered plan with an entry, a stop and targets, and a position size computed from your real equity rather than a rough figure. Placing an order, on the other hand, is refused. It is refused by your broker’s server and not by us, and the app flags it with a read-only marker rather than letting you find out at the moment you click.

With the master password, the same analysis comes with one-click order placement, at the computed levels and the computed size.

Our advice is to start with the investor password, and it does not particularly serve us: you judge the quality of the analysis on your own account, with no order able to leave, and you decide afterwards whether to go further.
